An Evening Concert

Sean Shibe
(guitar & lute)

What matters above all is that Shibe’s music-making is masterful, beautiful and convincing in every way
— Geoff Brown, The Times

Sean Shibe

Born in 1992 of English and Japanese parents, Sean Shibe studied under Allan Neave at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating in 2012 with first-class honours, and Paolo Pegoraro in Italy. One of the most versatile guitarists performing today, Shibe’s innovative approach to the instrument has enhanced his reputation for having “one of the most discriminating ears in the business” (Gramophone). An admirer of the great composers of the past, Sean is equally committed to new music. Alongside Bach’s lute Suites and seventeenth century Scottish lute manuscripts, he continues to explore, experiment and expand the repertoire, with new commissions of works by Thomas Ades, Helen Grime, Cassandra Miller and others.

Highlights of past seasons include international performances in Holland, Budapest, Tokyo, the USA and Germany, as well as concerts throughout the UK, including the East Neuk, Aldeburgh, Norfolk and Norwich Festivals, the Southbank Centre in London and many others.

He was the first guitarist ever to be selected as a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, to be awarded a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and, in 2018, the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Young Artists. Accolades for his recordings include two Gramophone Awards and an Opus Klassik. He is also the 2022 recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award.
